This is a crash course in the history of crime fiction, as seen through the eyes of the victim. Since the era of Sherlock Holmes and Edgar Allen Poe, the role that the victim has played in detective stories has changed dramatically. By examining this transformation, we get a sense of the way that mysteries have evolved, as well as an understanding of the enormous success of novels such as Gone Girl.
Made possible by a grant from Humanities Washington.
