The Wonder Woman origin story follows the dialectical pattern of G.W.F. Hegel’s philosophy of history: civilization starts with only the despot free, then the Ancient Greeks learn that some people are free, and finally we moderns have proclaimed that all are free.
Dennis Knepp has been the Philosophy and Religious Studies Instructor at Big Bend Community College since September of 2000. His essays on Twilight, Star Wars, The Hobbit, Avatar, Superman, and others are in Wiley-Blackwell’s “Pop Culture and Philosophy” series of books. His “Merciful Minerva in the Modern Metropolis” will be chapter 14 in their Wonder Woman and Philosophy.
