Historically, the ephemeral hardworking American political poster has been hiding in plain sight, attempting to catch our eye and capture our vote through the use of visual language. In a survey that spans the life of these ubiquitous messengers, Sign of the Times: The Great American Political Poster 1844-2012 explores a variety of styles, design trends, and printing technology that will delight your eye, engage your imagination, and lead you to ruminate over past political contests. Sign of the Times features the most exciting and rarely seen posters created in the last 170 years.

Feb 03   America's Paranoid Politics: Conspiracy Theories, Populism, and the New Anti-Establishment Politics with Cornell Clayton

Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location:
Moses Lake Museum & Art Center, 401 S. Balsam St.

Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau presents:

\American politics has often been an arena for suspicious and angry minds. In recent years a growing number of Americans have supported candidates who rail against the establishment, joined populist movements like the Tea Party or OWS and embraced wild conspiracy theories (the Birthers, 9-11 was government conspiracy, FEMA runs concentration camps, etc.). What explains this turn in our politics?

This lecture reexamines recent developments in light of an argument first made by the historian Richard Hofstadter in 1964, that the “paranoid style” has always been an important influence in American politics. Placing today’s politics into historical context, the lecture will draw parallel to previous periods of paranoid politics and explain the forces and factors that produce a politics marked by populist rhetoric, anti-establishment politics, and suspicion of political elites and institutions. It will also explain how populism on the left and right today differ.

Mar 01   Wonder Woman and the Dialectic of History with Dennis Knepp

Date: Wednesday, March 1, 2017
Time: 3:00 p.m.
Location: Moses Lake Museum & Art Center, 401 S. Balsam St.

The Wonder Woman origin story follows the dialectical pattern of G.W.F. Hegel’s philosophy of history: civilization starts with only the despot free, then the Ancient Greeks learn that some people are free, and finally we moderns have proclaimed that all are free.

Dennis Knepp has been the Philosophy and Religious Studies Instructor at Big Bend Community College since September of 2000. His essays on Twilight, Star Wars, The Hobbit, Avatar, Superman, and others are in Wiley-Blackwell’s “Pop Culture and Philosophy” series of books. The founders guiding principles and philosophies for the company
  • Make sure the men and women who have been hired into the "best job in the world," continue to think that throughout their career (enjoy their last year as much as their first)
  • To lose an employee who once thought they had the "best job in the world," due to a stressful event or accumulation of stressful situations, should be unacceptable
  • Create a "Culture" (embraced from the top of the organization to the bottom) that supports;
    • We work in high stress occupations
    • We hire human beings, and sometimes humans get overwhelmed
    • It's okay to say "that one got to me," and then a system is in place to assist this individual
    • Being overwhelmed IS NOT a sign of weakness or that you chose the wrong career…It's a sign of being human!

Apr 13   Bandanas to Badges: Songs and Stories of Northwest Workers with Trillium-239

Date: Thursday, April 13, 2017
Time: 7:00 p.m.

Location: Moses Lake Museum & Art Center, 401 S. Balsam St.
Cost: FREE

Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau presents:

Real people and real experiences are the foundation of folk music and stories, and are codified in the lasting representations found in our oral histories. Acoustic trio Trillium-239 shares stories and songs of working life in the Northwest, beginning with American settlement of the West and ending with modern high-tech industries. Thoughtful music selections and interesting historical tidbits reflect the evolution of these workers’ experiences.

Trillium-239 is an acoustic music trio made up of Michelle Cameron on cello, Janet Humphrey on guitar, and Mary Hartman on guitar and banjo. Their educational backgrounds of music and science, combined with years of traveling and delving into Northwest history, have allowed them to absorb colorful local and regional lore and given them a unique perspective on the working experience both past and present. Humphrey and Hartman have played music together for more than 20 years, and Cameron joined the group when she moved to Richland twelve years ago. Formerly known as Humphrey, Hartman & Cameron, the trio has played at concerts, coffeehouses, and festivals throughout the Northwest. Trillium-239 is based in Richland.

Apr 20   What It Means to be Human: What We Know about Our Ancient Predecessors with Llyn De Danaan

Date: Thursday, April 20, 2017
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Moses Lake Museum & Art Center, 401 S. Balsam St.
Cost: FREE

Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau presents:

Deep caves, adorned with representations of long extinct animals and strewn with the ashy remains of ancient hearths and stone tools, are portals to knowledge of our selves.

As more age-old dwellings and remains of our ancient inhabitants are discovered, the story of what it means to be human becomes more intriguing and complex. Author and cultural anthropologist Llyn De Danaan explores our origins and how they help us define what it means to be human, and examines recent finds that have altered our understanding of our past. Further, what will it mean to be human in the future as new technologies challenge our own intelligence and hard-won skills? Wonder together what the future holds.

LLyn De Danaan is an anthropologist, writer, and photographer. Her eclectic experiences include co-producing a film about basket makers Louisa Pulsifer and Emily Miller of the Skokomish Tribe, working with Japanese American poets and their families on a project called “Mountain of Shell” that describes their lives and labor on Oyster Bay in southern Puget Sound, and producing a book of literary history called Katie Gale: A Coast Salish Woman’s Life on Oyster Bay. She was a Peace Corps volunteer in Sarawak, Malaysia from 1962-64, and joined the faculty of The Evergreen State College in 1971. Among De Danaan’s accolades are a Fulbright scholarship and the Washington State Historical Society’s Peace and Friendship Award. She was an expert witness for the Puyallup Tribe of Indians and the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. De Danaan lives in Shelton.

Apr 27   Sasquatch: Man-Ape or Myth? with David George Gordon

Date: Thursday, April 27, 2017
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Moses Lake Museum & Art Center, 401 S. Balsam St.
Cost: FREE

Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau presents:

Throughout the Northwest, people have been reporting encounters with the Sasquatch - a hairy, eight- to ten-foot-tall hominid - for hundreds of years. Yet aside from a collection of large footprint casts and a sizable assemblage of eyewitness accounts, some attributable to the earliest humans in the Northwest, no scientifically accepted evidence has been offered to establish this being’s existence.

Author David George Gordon evaluates the data gathered about the legendary Northwest icon, discusses the rules of critical thinking and the workings of the scientific method, and explains how one can become an effective “citizen scientist” by gathering credible evidence that can be used to substantiate the Sasquatch’s status as either Man-Ape or Myth. Attendees are encouraged to tell their tales and share their experiences with this mysterious creature.

David George Gordon is the author of The Sasquatch Seeker’s Field Manual: Using Citizen Science to Uncover North America’s Most Elusive Creature. An accomplished science communicator, he has spoken at the American Museum of Natural History, The Philadelphia Academy of Sciences, Yale University, the Smithsonian Institution, and Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museums in San Francisco, Hollywood, and Times Square. He has been interviewed by National Geographic, Time, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, and appeared as a guest on television shows that include The Late Late Show with James Corden, The View, and ABC’s Nightline. Gordon lives in Seattle.

Purchase a copy of David George Gordon’s book, The Sasquatch Seeker’s Field Manual: Using Citizen Science to Uncover North America’s Most Elusive Creature, in our Museum Store and have it signed after the presentation!

May 03   North Western Journeys: Spokane Pioneers and Scablands Settlers with John W. Lawton

Date: Wednesday, May 3, 2017
Time: 3:00 p.m.

Location: Moses Lake Museum & Art Center, 401 S. Balsam St.
Cost: FREE

Join John Lawton as he talks about his new book about a family saga of westward migration that is told through the voices of people who lived 100 years ago by means of letters, diaries, oral history and photographs. It includes a memoir of the author’s improbable discoveries as he found the stories of the grandfather he never knew. The Lawtons’ first ancestor arrived in Massachusetts in 1635. Its succeeding generations followed forest cutting to the west, across the northern states, until one branch of the family arrived in frontier Spokane in 1890. Will and Irene Lawton followed a string of settlers from Wisconsin, where the pine forests were playing out after a quarter century of logging. They established homes and businesses in Spokane, then left in 1906 and settled a few miles west in the scablands of the Columbia Plateau, where they bought land, took up a homestead, and commenced farming and storekeeping. The dream worked until misfortune and flawed assumptions eventually led to the loss of all they had built. The family had been multi-generational and closely knit. But by 1920 the family had scattered because of untimely deaths and the collapse of homesteading. As a fatherless boy, Walter Lawton, Will’s son, spent years in Idaho’s mountains herding sheep to get by.

John Lawton grew up in Yakima, Washington. He holds degrees from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and Washington State University in Pullman. He spent his career in city finance and management with positions as City Manager of Great Falls, Montana, and Assistant Administrator in Billings. He was appointed by two governors to consecutive terms on the Montana Heritage Preservation Commission. He won an international award for professional work in done in Central Asia, traveling extensively there.

Location: Moses Lake Museum & Art Center, 401 S. Balsam St.

On February 19, 1942 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing the forced removal and incarceration of more than 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast to concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1944, thousands left the camps to work in seasonal farm labor. This exhibit introduces their story.

Uprooted features a selection of photographs from Russell Lee’s documentation of Japanese American farm labor camps near the towns of Nyssa, Oregon and Rupert, Shelley, and Twin Falls, Idaho.  As a photographer for the Farm Security Administration, Lee captured nearly six hundred images of the Japanese American wartime experience.

Uprooted is supported, in part, by grants from the National Park Service, Japanese American Confinement Sites Preservation Program; the Idaho Humanities Council, a State-based Program of the National Endowment for the Humanities; and the Fred W. Fields Fund of The Oregon Community Foundation.

Jun 09   The Pine and the Cherry: Japanese Americans in Washington with Mayumi Tsutakawa

Date: Friday, June 9, 2017
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Moses Lake Museum & Art Center, 401 S. Balsam St.
Cost: FREE

Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau presents:

In the lead-up to World War II, Japantown in Seattle featured grocery stores, cafes, and native-language services, as well as labor and music clubs. Trading companies imported Japanese goods, and restaurants served the familiar sukiyaki, tofu, and miso soup. In Eastern Washington, Japanese farmers prospered.

Then came Executive Order 9066. Those born in Japan, as well as their American-citizen offspring, were sent, without due process, to concentration camps in windswept deserts. Throughout the West Coast, 120,000 Japanese Americans were forced from their homes. Most Seattle Japanese spent the war years at Camp Minidoka in Idaho, and when they returned, most had lost everything and could not find jobs.

How did they face this injustice and rebuild their lives? How does a lively immigrant community face racist or religious hatred? The 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066 is in 2017, and Mayumi Tsutakawa, whose father was renowned sculptor George Tsutakawa, will reveal her family’s 100-year history against the backdrop of this dramatic American story.

Mayumi Tsutakawa is an independent writer and curator who has focused on Asian/Pacific American history. She co-edited The Forbidden Stitch: Asian American Women’s Literary Anthology which received the Before Columbus Foundation’s American Book Award. She also edited two books on pioneer Asian American artists: They Painted from their Hearts and Turning Shadows into Light. Tsutakawa received her master’s degree in communications and her bachelor’s degree in East Asian studies at the University of Washington. Her graduate thesis is one of the few documents to research pre-war Japanese American newspapers. Aug 25 - Aug 27   Crescent Bar RiverFest 2017

Crescent Bar River Fest Schedule for August 25-27, 2017

QUINCY, WASHINGTON (January 25, 2017) – The third annual Crescent Bar River Fest has been scheduled for Friday, August 25 through Sunday, August 27 on the Columbia River at the Crescent Bar Community in Quincy, WA. This unique summer festival is a free community celebration for the greater Columbia Basin residents, families and friends who gather at Crescent Bar.
This winter Grant County PUD has started construction on their improvement plans at Crescent Bar to include a new 55 unit campground, park renovations on and off the island, a walking path, and improvements to the off-island marina. We anticipate that these improvements to the island community are going to enhance the Crescent Bar experience.
The projected completion time for these projects is in early summer. However, the PUD has provided event organizers Sunshine Marketing with information on the progress of construction so that a good, sound decision can be made about the event date for Crescent Bar River Fest this year. Both the event organizers and the PUD wish to produce the best possible event to be hosted at the redefined venue.
Based on the projected construction schedule, it has been decided to consider a date later in the summer.  For the past two years, the event has been held the weekend before 4th of July in late June. This year this event will be held the weekend before Labor Day weekend in August. August typically proves to have great warm weather, and should be an equally wonderful weekend for Crescent Bar River Fest.
The festival will feature many events over the course of three days centered around watersports competitions. There will be wine tasting, professional and amateur INT League waterski and wakeboard competitions, a paddle sports race, golf tournament, classic car show, motorcycle rally, live music, a beer and wine garden, farmers market and more. For more information, please visit CrescentBarRiverFest.com.  ###
