Mar 1    Wonder Woman and the Dialectic of History with Dennis Knepp

Date: Wednesday, March 1, 2017
Time: 3:00 p.m.
Location: Moses Lake Museum & Art Center, 401 S. Balsam St.

The Wonder Woman origin story follows the dialectical pattern of G.W.F. Hegel’s philosophy of history: civilization starts with only the despot free, then the Ancient Greeks learn that some people are free, and finally we moderns have proclaimed that all are free.

Dennis Knepp has been the Philosophy and Religious Studies Instructor at Big Bend Community College since September of 2000. His essays on Twilight, Star Wars, The Hobbit, Avatar, Superman, and others are in Wiley-Blackwell’s “Pop Culture and Philosophy” series of books. His “Merciful Minerva in the Modern Metropolis” will be chapter 14 in their Wonder Woman and Philosophy.

The founders guiding principles and philosophies for the company
  • Make sure the men and women who have been hired into the "best job in the world," continue to think that throughout their career (enjoy their last year as much as their first)
  • To lose an employee who once thought they had the "best job in the world," due to a stressful event or accumulation of stressful situations, should be unacceptable
  • Create a "Culture" (embraced from the top of the organization to the bottom) that supports;
    • We work in high stress occupations
    • We hire human beings, and sometimes humans get overwhelmed
    • It's okay to say "that one got to me," and then a system is in place to assist this individual
    • Being overwhelmed IS NOT a sign of weakness or that you chose the wrong career…It's a sign of being human!
